Other Moments by
RG Bishop is a dual text English & German collection. I cannot comment on the German versions, but the poems in English are of high quality. They are original; fierce yet tender. I hope RG Bishop will be taken up by a mainstream publisher. His work deserves a wide readership. Subjects include his Irish roots; he
considers his father lost at sea in 1942; 'How you, smart in your tar's blue, turned from my mother./Each uniform accords/the right to die/one way or another' (from 'Rebirth'), undergoing chemotherapy 'the nightmare's deceptive, consolatory terms. 'He handles
skillfully the shifting facets of time; ecstasy?/will I squeal like something being raped/succumbing as it tries/to stop that last conception/in its bag of lies?' (from 'On The Death of a Believer'). The same finely-forced/wrought ferocity is brought to bear in poems which broadly be described as on conservation: 'So they took the turtle/The brown men of Fiji,/And laid it on its back/alive in the noon day sun,/Prized open its panzer girdle..../Like lovers, the killers fumbled with the living warmth..../With the taking of its heart, the fuse blew.' From Original Plus, 11 Heatherton Park, Bradford on Tone, Taunton, Somerset TA4 1AU, £6.
